Age is Just a Number

I believe we can start new things at any age, achieve, accomplish, & be productive. Yes, health can be a barrier, but if you’re in good health, what stops you from reaching your goals, writing that best seller, going for a promotion, taking a class & learning a new skill? In other words, keeping those brain cells active. And you don’t have to retire to do those things.

Societal norms seem to tell us at a certain age; we should retire. We should “do what we want to do” & not be at the mercy of a work boss. If we retire, we can sleep late, travel, renovate the house, & finish that jar of honey-do lists. I have attended many retirement ceremonies over the years & everyone says the same things they’re going to do in retirement, yet within six months, they are back to work. So, I’m bewildered.

I am living my life now & doing everything I want to do. I know for a fact that I would not sleep late. Pets get you up early, like babies, on their feeding schedule. I would not travel any more than I do now. In retirement, I might have the time, but the days of Motel 6 prices are long gone as travel has become expensive & frustrating. The house renovations get done when they’re needed & the honey-do jar stays empty most of the time.

Someday I may transition into something else, but it won’t be retirement. It might be my own business. I love bookstores. My ideal bookstore would include lots of cats & comfy chairs for reading. I love thrift shops & helping people find great bargains. So no retirement on the horizon & age is just a number. This girl has got lots to do before she checks out!
