Frosting

I have a girlfriend who retired several months ago. We keep in touch, even through short texts or e-mails. I value her friendship because she is a deep thinker like I am; she loves books, particularly the use of words and how they can convey so much meaning.

Words have the energy and power to help, heal, hurt, harm, humiliate, and humble. The words we choose and how we use them can build others up or tear them down. Words have energy. Watch the news, or Facebook comments to understand how every word spoken or read creates an image and energy in our minds.

The choices we make with our language set the parameters for our lives. The skill of expression we possess can contribute to many facets of our ability to succeed personally and professionally. The real power in words is their meaning and interpretation. That is also the real power in life.

This week I received a poem from my friend – the title is Frosting. I love the word frosting because it brings to mind the enjoyment of a sweet treat. The frosting is a delicious fluffy spread that covers a cake. Most times, we are so fascinated by the frosting that we don’t appreciate the cake underneath, which is the heart of the dessert.

Frosting
Love can arrive, wearing many a disguise
But never does it look
Like an expensive gift or a romantic weekend
For two.

That’s just frosting.

You’re far more likely, to find real love
In a cup of tea made just for you
Exactly the way you like it.

I like the subtle meaning of this poem. Many times in our life, we have relationships or friends that are just sugarcoating. Their actions are disguised and convey one sense, but underneath they may be hiding something which likely is not a cake.

So don’t be frosting, and learn to recognize the frosting in others. Many beautiful desserts don’t have any frosting at all.

Adrienne, I truly valued our deployment days, & how we learned from each other. There were some stressful times & we figured out quickly who was just “frosting” & who we could depend upon. I follow your Facebook posts & you’re just as beautiful as ever. Thank you for taking the time to read my blog. Hugs, bj

BJ I loved the poem and your commentary was on point. It’s interesting how we flow through this life with nothing but frosting to look forward to; to scared to find out that that’s all it is, and not moving from a relationship to look for the cake we all deserve!!
