Good Deeds

Pay it Forward

During the month of June, I decided that I wanted to perform 74 Good Deeds as a way of celebrating my 74th birthday.  Engaging in good deeds not only helps others but also provides a sense of fulfillment and purpose to the doer, which is me.   In a world that can often seem divided and challenging, good deeds serve as powerful reminders of our shared humanity and the impact of kindness in creating a more harmonious society.  However, little did I realize that performing 74 Good Deeds would be so difficult.

You see, my Good Deeds had to be something above and beyond what I normally do.  And I’m not bragging that I’m a Good Deed doer but yes, I found that I naturally reach out to others and do kind things every day.  I donate to the homeless, I try to tip well for service, I pay compliments to others, and pay it forward at the lunch cash register.  Accomplishing extra good deeds was a slight challenge because it had to be something that I didn’t normally do.

I started keeping a log and to reach 74 by 26 June, I had to average at least 3 a day.  That meant I had up my daily ante.  I started buying lunches in the cafeteria for people I didn’t know, I gave away food cards, I donated blood, I brought snacks into the office, and a whole lot of other things, but for a few of these, I felt guilty putting on my list because I would have done those good deeds anyway.

So, on my birthday, I was up to 30.  I have a few more that I will complete before the end of the month but what my journaling told me is that I’m naturally a giving, caring, and thoughtful person and to just continue doing what I’m doing which is making a difference every day for someone else and continue to pay it forward.
