Refrigerator Makeover
This is an update on my refrigerator saga. I may have yet to report on the complete story, but I did not have a refrigerator for about 8 months. The fan in my 8-year-old refrigerator went out and the cost of the new part plus labor was the same as buying a new one. Since I didn’t want to buy a new one right then, it was almost a challenge to see how long I could go without one.
I just stopped at the store more often and if I made a meal using fresh ingredients, it had to be cooked on the day I brought the ingredients home. I grew up in a make-do-with-what-you-have world and everyone but me thought I needed a refrigerator.
About a month ago, I did get a refrigerator. My neighbor “gifted” me this Sears Kenmore. I believe in reusing/recycling as much as you can. It needed some love which I overabundantly gave to it. Before it came into the kitchen, it received a thorough cleaning, inside and out, including removing the seals and getting into all the cracks and crevices.
My other appliances are not white, so this was an opportunity to do something I had wanted to do for a long time. That was paint it. Some of you are likely too young to remember the colored appliances from the 60’s and 70’s. The popular colors were avocado green and harvest gold but there was also a color called poppy red and red was what I wanted.
You can find how to do anything on YouTube so that’s where I went and watched how you got your appliance prepped, ready, and painted. I wrote down the items I needed, and I went to Lowe’s and came home with foam rollers, liquid sandpaper, primer, and a quart of red paint.
The first step was sanding to remove the shine. I was hesitant to use the liquid sandpaper but it worked well, followed by a couple of coats of base primer. Once that was done, it was time to add the color. I started on the top because I figured if it wasn’t working out, you wouldn’t see it and I could always go back to white. Once I finished the top and it was looking pretty good, I kept going.
I gave it a couple of coats of paint and after I was satisfied, I pushed the refrigerator back into its place.
I felt it still needed something to make it be me and the freezer door was a perfect canvas to add a little jolliness to the refrigerator.
